Fundraiser for the Good Shepherd Orphanage

Hi All!

Well it's been just over a month back home and I must say, time flies. My aunt (Per Mu) and uncle (Da Per literal translation means "Big Uncle") paid us a visit all the way from a town called Bukit Mertajam  in Malaysia.

It was really great to spend time with them, and especially to see my father being able to share beautiful New Zealand with his big brother for the first time.  On several occasions I was able to tag along.. eg. fishing on the rocks and going to Goat Island (not sure why it's called that.. no goats, nor is it an island...). So yes, I have been taking it easy for the time being. Spending time with family and catching up with old friends has been a top priority.

6.0 Presenting Kampuchea

But it hasn't been all play. Over the last month, I have been able to share my time and experiences in Cambodia at church and also at my pastor's Rotary Club. It's been really good being able to tell people about Cambodia and what projects are going on.  Hopefully I'll get a few more opportunities to speak. If you're interested you can watch my presentation here...Part 1 and Part 2 (sorry the my camera ran of memory, so it's not the presentation in it's full entirety). It's missing the last part where I talk about the Good Shepherd Orphanage.. speaking of which......

6.1 Fundraiser for Good Shepherd Orphanage

As I mentioned in my previous blog, the during the few months of my stay in Phnom Penh, I spent some time with the children at the Good Shepherd Orphanage. I heard from Monika (Swiss volunteer temporarily running the orphanage) last week that their current van has completely broken down and is too expensive to repair.  Even when it was working, it was never reliable and in constant need of attention.

They use this van for all sorts of purposes.. taking the children out on weekends, to the dentist and for Monika to run various errands around Phnom Penh. The van has been a concern for Monika for a while, and now that it's completely out of use, it's been difficult for her and the rest of the team to accomplish the simplest of tasks.

Old van that is now "Out of Service"....

So I thought it'd be a good idea to hold a fundraiser event to help this orphanage in the purchasing of a new (second hand) van.

It will be on the evening of 30th of April at my church and we will be screening a documentary called New Year Baby. It's an award winning film about a young Cambodian lady who was born in a Thai refugee camp. Her family emigrated to the U.S. (Texas) and only when she was 25 do her parents reveal the story about their survival of the Khmer Rouge. Socheata (filmmaker) then makes her way back to Cambodia to uncover the truth behind her family and discovers the struggles her family and the so many others endured during the reign of the Khmer Rouge. For more info you can visit newyearbaby.net

We'll also be serving Cambodian desserts (which I'll need to experiment making..!) and I'm sure mum and her friends will whip up some other sweet Malaysian treats. They're actually both quite similar (Malaysian and Cambodian sweeties that is).. I was happy to find the popular malaysian cake nine layer kueh at the Russian Markets. They're all very "coconutty".

I'll also be speaking about the orphanage and about the issues faced in Cambodia e.g sex trafficking. During the event, people will be able to make their donations to the Good Shepherd Orphanage.

I really hope we'll be able to raise a substantial amount for this orphanage.. it's not under any big organization (like World Vision or Samaritan's Purse) so don't receive much funding..even so, I get the impression they are just getting by. How they are currently being supported I am still unclear.. but all I know is they could use a help in hand - and that is what we can do.

If you live in Auckland gather your family, friends and church community and come along to the fundraiser event on Saturday 30th April. Help this orphanage and gain insight into what is happening in Cambodia today. If you cannot make it out to the event, but would still like to help, you can do one of the following:

1. Use the donate button at the top left corner of this blog.
2. Give your donations to myself or K.C. or Angie Ng
3. Head to your local ASB Bank and use the Fast Deposit bags and make your donation to the fundraiser account.
Name: Kher Juin (Jean) Ng A/C: 12-3087-0151613-52
4. Mail your cheques to: 19 Emlyn Place, Torbay, North Shore 0630, Auckland (payable to me Kher Juin (Jean) Ng.

I promise all donations will go directly to the orphanage. God is watching after all..!

If you find yourself unable to make a monetary donation, don't worry. If you can pray for the fundraiser event and for the Good Shepherd Orphanage that would be great. They are still looking for a father and mother to take over from Monika.

Thanks all for your support. Together, we can make a difference.

Love jeanie

If there is a poor man among you, one of your brothers, in any of the towns of the land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart, nor close your hand to your poor brother; but you shall freely open your hand to him, and generously lend him sufficient for his need in whatever he lacks. - Deuteronomy 15:7
